British Fly Fair International

The Premier Fly Tying Show

Phil Middleton

Phil Middleton

My Grandad got me into fishing as a very young boy but I didn’t get into fly fishing until I was at University in Durham. A friend and I would head over to Derwent Water and Grassholme to scare the fish with our appalling casting. However my interest was piqued and I carried on fly fishing from then on.

I started fly tying around 2014 when I was gifted a kit, but I had no idea what to do and, being someone who needs to learn by doing, I went along to my local Fly Dressers Guild branch. The Hertfordshire FDG very much took me under their wing and my tying came on leaps and bounds as did my understanding of entomology.

I have been lucky enough to demonstrate fly tying on International Fly Tyers Row at the BFFI, on Fly Tyers Row at the London Fly Fishing Fair, and on Veniard’s stand at The Game Fair.

I now try to give back as much as a job and young family will allow, by teaching tying to people of all ages as part of the Essex Fly Dressers.
