The Premier Fly Tying Show

Richard Grinham

Richard Grinham

I began fly fishing in Lincolnshire at the age of 13 and have loved it ever since. From an early age I tried to immerse myself in the sport as much as possible however on deciding to join the Army at the age of 16 I was unable to teach myself to tie flies with the basic kit that my parents got for me at age 15. With a limited number of materials, I was able to learn basic techniques and patterns but with no success in fishing with them.

I was able to fish throughout my career, mostly in the UK but also in the Falkland Islands, though I still never found the time to dig my tools out and finally teach myself to tie. On leaving the Army to work as a gundog trainer I was able to fish more regularly, however it wasn’t until the lockdowns of 2020 that I finally had the time to teach myself to tie properly. With the help of YouTube and books I attempted to learn as much as I could and developed a love for tying. Drawing inspiration form Gordon Van Der Spuy, Davie McPhail and Barry Ord Clarke I tried to emulate their levels of precision and attention to detail. I had immediate success with my flies at my local Stillwater which further led me down the rabbit hole.
After tying for friends and family, as well as myself focussing on Dry Flies, Buzzers and Nymphs; I was encouraged to start selling my flies. Hesitant at first, I have quickly established several very loyal customers as my flies have caught fish on rivers and still

waters across the country whilst also doing tying demonstrations at popular fisheries. I have also raised money for several charities including Cancer Research and Fishing for Forces through auctions of my fly boxes.

It will be a great honour to be invited to Tyres Row and share my work with everyone.
