Thomas Knutsen

My name is Thomas Knutsen and I come from a small town in Norway named Stjørdal. I am 22 years old and have been dressing flies in hand since 2019. I fish for mostly any fish, but in season, the salmon is obviously my favourite.
My fly-tying journey started in January 2017 and my interest in this became more like an addiction at the time. I dressed modern salmon flies on double hooks and trebles, and I dressed trout flies like nymphs, streamers and dry flies. I would stay in my room tying flies for hours at a time.
In 2018 I started tying more classic style salmon flies. Feather wings and such. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was having fun! I learned so much that year, and just a year after I started dressing them in hand. I participated in the mid-Norwegian championship in fly tying early in the year and ended up winning. This gave me the chance to join the fly-tying stations at “Camp Villmark”. A show for outdoors stuff and people like us. I was later invited to the “Nordic Flyfair” for 2020, but because of Corona I didn’t get to do that. Not until 2022 that is.
Late 2019 I participated in Yasuhiro Ogasawara’s GH Project. My GH was with a very different wing than most out there. I was also in 2020 featured in the Norwegian Podcast “Anadrom”. A podcast about salmon, trout and other anadromous species. In 2022 I was at the “EWF” in Munich, Germany. This was a great experience for me and the place where I met some new friends that I will never forget. Shortly after I was at the “Nordic Flyfair” (finally), and this was not a bad show either! A lot smaller, but absolutely a show to remember! At the end of the year, I was at the “Bending Feathers”. A new show with potential. In 2023 I attended this show, the BFFI. That was a good time! Later in the year I went to the EWF and the Nordic Flyfair again. Now I look forward to attending the BFFI for my second time!
Right now, I dress traditional salmon flies in hand. If that is something you would like to see, them come by and have a talk. I will be there. I look forward to seeing you all at the show!
Best for now!
